Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger―they will be with those on whom Allah has bestowed His Grace and Favour from among the Prophets, the truthful who aided the truth, the martyrs and the righteous―how excellent these companions are!” (An-Nisā’: 69) : QUR'AN TAFSEER

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the name of Allah, Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all creation, and may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and all his Companions.

Allah, the Most High, said:

“Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger―they will be with those on whom Allah has bestowed His Grace and Favour from among the Prophets, the truthful who aided the truth, the martyrs and the righteous―how excellent these companions are!” (An-Nisā’: 69)

A’ishah (radiyallāhu ‘anhā) said: A man came to the Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) and said: “O Messenger of Allāh! You are more beloved to me than my wife, my wealth, my property and my son. I was in my home and thought about you and I was not able to be patient until I had come to you and saw you. And when I think of my death and your death, I know when you enter Jannah, you will be raised to the levels of the Prophets (‘alaihimus-salām). And if I enter Paradise, I fear that I will not see you.” So the Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) did not answer him with anything until Jibreel (‘alaihis-salām) descended with this Āyah: “Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, they will be with those on whom Allah has bestowed His Grace and Favour…”[1]

Regarding the saying of Allah in this Āyah: “Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger…” Ibn Katheer (d. 774H) stated: “Whoever acts on the commands of Allah and His Messenger; and abandons what Allah and His Messenger (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) have prohibited, Allah will settle him in an abode of honour and generosity―and He will place him in the company of the Prophets (‘alaihimus-salām), then those after them in rank and they are the Siddīqoon (the truthful who aided the truth), then the martyrs, then the believers in general, and they are the righteous (Sālihoon) who do good in private and in public. After mentioning them, Allah praises them by saying, ‘And how excellent these companions are!’” (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 1/522).

A’ishah (radiyallāhu ‘anhā) said that Allah’s Messenger (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) would say, “No prophet dies until he sees his place in Jannah and then he is given the option [to choose this life or the Hereafter].” So when he (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) suffered from illness on his deathbed, he became unconscious. When he regained consciousness, he looked up into the sky and said: “With those upon whom Allah has bestowed His Favour from among the Prophets, the truthful who aided the truth, the martyrs and the righteous―how excellent these companions are! O Allah forgive me, have mercy on me, and unite me with the highest companionship. So, from that, I knew he had chosen the Hereafter. (Bukhāri 4437, Muslim 2444)

‘Amr bin Murrah Al-Juhani said that a man came to the Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) and said: “O Allah’s Messenger! If I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah, and I pray the five daily prayers, I pay the Zakāh, I fast the days of Ramadān and I stand in prayer during its nights―who will I be among?” The Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) answered: “You’ll be with the those who believed and aided the truth and with and the martyrs.” (Saheeh Ibn Hibbān, no. 3429)

Rabī’ah bin Mālik Al-Aslami (radiyallāhu ‘anhu) said: “I spent the evening with the Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) and I brought him water for ablution and whatever else he needed. He said to me: ‘Ask me what you want.’ I replied, ‘I ask for your companionship in Jannah.’ He said, ‘Anything else besides?’ I replied, ‘That is all.’ So, he said, ‘Then help me to to get that for by devoting yourself to plentiful prostrations (Sujood).’” (Muslim, 489)

Ibn Katheer stated: “Greater than all this is what has been authentically reported in the Saheeh of Al-Bukhāri, and in the Musnads and in other books of hadeeth through multiple narrators and chains of narration (mutawātirah) from a group of the Sahābah that the Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) was asked about a man who loves a people―will he be united with them [in the Hereafter]? So he (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) responded, ‘A person will be with the ones he loves.’ Anas (radiyallāhu ‘anhu) said, ‘There was nothing that gave more joy to the Muslims than this hadeeth.’” (Reported Bukhari no. 6169, Muslim no. 2640; see Tafseer Ibn Katheer 1/523)

Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri (radiyallāhu ‘anhu) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The people of Paradise will see the inhabitants of the dwellings above them just as you see the shining stars which remain in the eastern and western horizons because of the excellence and virtue that some have over others.” They asked, “O Allah’s Messenger! Are these lofty stations for the Prophets that no one besides them can attain?” He replied, “Rather, by the One in whose Hand is my soul, it is for those who believed in Allah and confirmed the truthfulness of the Messengers.” (Bukhāri no. 3256 and Muslim no. 2831)

We ask Allah to unite us with the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous on the Day when neither wealth nor children will benefit us―a Day where only a sound heart and pious deeds benefit. And all praise is due to Allah―may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and all his Companions and true followers.

Footnotes:

[1] Reported by At-Tabarāni Al-Mu’jam As-Sagheer 1/26; Al-Haythami said in Majma’ Az-Zawā’id (7/7) that all the narrators are narrators of Sahīh Al-Bukhāri except Abdullāh bin ‘Imrān and he is trustworthy (thiqah). And this narration is supported by the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Abbās cited in Majma’ Az-Zawā’id (7/7) and that has in its chain ‘Atā bin As-Sā’ib and he used to mix up narrations. Imām Muqbil Al-Wādi’i stated in his book, As-Saheeh Al-Musnad min Asbāb an-Nuzool (pp. 70-71): It has been reported by Abu Nu’aym in Al-Hilyah (4/240, 8/125) and Al-Wāhidi in Asbāb an-Nuzool with this chain of narration―and Ash-Shawkāni stated: Al-Maqdisi declared the narration to be hasan and it has support as mentioned in the Tafseer of Ibn Katheer (1/523) that strengthens its validity.
