হযরত ইউনুস বিন মাত্তা (আঃ)-এর কথা পবিত্র কুরআনের মোট ৬টি সূরার ১৮টি আয়াতে[1] বর্ণিত হয়েছে। সূরা ইউনুস ৯৮ আয়াতে তাঁর নাম ইউনুস, সূরা আম্বিয়া ৮৭ আয়াতে ‘যুন-নূন’ (ذو النون) এবং সূরা ক্বলম ৪৮ আয়াতে তাঁকে ‘ছাহেবুল হূত’ (صاحب الحوت) বলা হয়েছে। ‘নূন’ ও ‘হূত’ উভয়ের অর্থ মাছ। যুন-নূন ও ছাহেবুল হূত অর্থ মাছওয়ালা। একটি বিশেষ ঘটনার প্রেক্ষিতে তিনি উক্ত নামে পরিচিত হন। সামনে তা বিবৃত হবে। ইউনুস (আঃ)-এর কওম : ইউনুস (আঃ) বর্তমান ইরাকের মূছেল নগরীর নিকটবর্তী ‘নীনাওয়া’ (نينوى) জনপদের অধিবাসীদের প্রতি প্রেরিত হন। তিনি তাদেরকে তাওহীদের দাওয়াত দেন এবং ঈমান ও সৎকর্মের প্রতি আহবান জানান। কিন্তু তারা তাঁর প্রতি অবাধ্যতা প্রদর্শন করে। বারবার দাওয়াত দিয়ে প্রত্যাখ্যাত হ’লে আল্লাহর হুকুমে তিনি এলাকা ত্যাগ করে চলে যান। ইতিমধ্যে তার কওমের উপরে আযাব নাযিল হওয়ার পূর্বাভাস দেখা দিল। জনপদ ত্যাগ করার সময় তিনি বলে গিয়েছিলেন যে, তিনদিন পর সেখানে গযব নাযিল হ’তে পারে। তারা ভাবল, নবী কখনো মিথ্যা বলেন না। ফলে ইউনুসের কওম ভীত-সন্ত্রস্ত হয়ে দ্রুত কুফর ও শিরক হ’তে তওবা করে এবং জনপদের সকল আবাল-বৃদ্ধ-বণিতা এবং গবাদিপশু সব নিয়ে জঙ...

The Aad and the Thamud are two nations mentioned several times in the Quran. They are often discussed when Allah is directing our attention to people who disobeyed Him and were punished as a result. The exact time of their existence is nearly impossible to determine. But we can conclude from the verses of the Quran that they lived sometime after the flood of Noah and before the time of Ibrahim (AS). Both groups of people were located on the Arabian Peninsula.
