  Imam Ibn Baaz: In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful An extract from my letter I sent to His Excellency Shaykh  Abu Al-A`la Al-Mawdudy  concerning  the difference between `Ibadah and obedience On 2/4//1392 A.H.,  Abu Al-A`la Al-Mawdudy  sent me a letter no. 1526, dated 2 Safar, 1392 A.H. explaining his case and  Tufayl’s,  his successor in the leadership of Islamic Group. I replied in the same year when I was the President of the Islamic University in  Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah  and the following is some of my reply: Some brothers from  Milbar  living in the country told me that Your Eminence opine that  `Ibadah is clarified by obedience and that when someone obeys another, he worships him. `Ibadah is also interpreted as enslavement and idolization.   Abandoning the Prayer is from the Most Dangerous of Sins (Imām Adh-Dhahabi)  Al-Imām Al-Hāfidh Abu Abdillāh Muhammad bin Ahmad Adh-Dhahabi (d. 748H, rahimahullāh) mentioned abandoning the Prayer (As-Salāt)  as the fourth major sin  in his tremendous work entitled,  “The Major Sins (Al-Kabā’ir).”  The following is an abridgement of the  Chapter: Abandoning the Prayer . Allah, the Most High, stated: فَخَلَفَ مِن بَعْدِهِمْ خَلْفٌ أَضَاعُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَاتَّبَعُوا الشَّهَوَاتِ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَلْقَوْنَ غَيًّا – 19:59 “But then, there came after them those who gave up the Prayers (Salāt) and they followed their lusts. Safwan both went to Umm Salama, the Mother of the Faithful, and they asked her about the army which would be sunk in the earth, and this relates to the time when Ibn Zubair (was the governor of Mecca). She reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) had said that a seeker of refuge would seek refuge in the Sacred House and an army would be sent to him (in order to kill him) and when it would enter a plain ground, it would be made to sink. The Hasan Hadeeth:  Definition: A report that fulfils the conditions of a Saheeh hadeeth except that one of its narrators or some of them are lesser than their counterparts in a Saheeh hadeeth in terms of precision (الضبط) yet that does not remove it from being used as an evidence in terms of its authenticity. And it is referred to as Hasan li-dhaatihi (الحسن لذاته). More explanation of the terms:  So it meets the conditions of Saheeh hadeeth in terms of: Its chain of narration (isnaad) leads back to the Prophet (salallaahu `alaihi wassallam). The chain of narration is connected all the way back to the Prophet (salallaahu`alaihi wassallam). The narrators are trustworthy. It is free from contradicting any narrations stronger than it. It is free from subtle or hidden defects. What remains therefore is the condition of  precision (ضبط)  – and this is the distinguishing feature of this category.
